Vacuum is built with the pump on the handle: a few strokes and the cup holds. Nothing to charge and nothing to go flat, so the tool is equally ready at the start of a shift and after a month in the van.
The mechanical gauge shows the remaining pressure under the cup. Vacuum leaks away gradually — through dust, a rough substrate, a small unevenness — and without an instrument you only find out when the slab starts to move. Here the drop is visible in advance: the needle enters the red zone, time to pump.
Twenty centimetres give a large contact area — this size is taken for large-format tiles, glass and sheet metal. The bigger the cup, the lower the load per unit of surface and the more confident the grip on something slippery.
The surface under the cup must be clean and dry — dust breaks the vacuum faster than any unevenness.
